I use to live in a fairly large city, and found while buying local was something I did, I didn’t really focus on buying from smaller shops. We didn’t have too many, and they were all across town. But when I moved to a smaller town, buying local, and supporting local became easier and so much more important to me.
Of course, I have always done my best to support Canadian companies, and love supporting smaller family owned business, that are earth friendly. Having a blog has really helped me support them on a larger scale, and helped me discover ones I might not normally have seen.
One of our local companies that I love (but are available across Canada – which I am so proud of!!) is called Echoes In the Attic. Echoes in the Attic is a company started by 2 mompreneurs that are creating an eco empire. I love that they call it their empire because I always say I am building an empire, and that my goal is world domination! They are saving the planet one eco-handbag at a time.
Echoes in the Attic eco-consciously creates their full line of handbags, totes, flatbags, diaper & laptop bags using XS textiles & leftover fabrics from post-manufacturing & designer samples. Echoes eco-bags are Canadian, vegan, animal-friendly, one of a kind (or few), factory-free, made lovingly and carefully with attention to detail by professional seamstresses on industrial machines who work from the comfort of their homes. They have diverted 40 TONS of material from landfills and are still COUNTING!
One of the Mompreneurs is Laura who I personally met and was even invited to the special girl cave (Think bat cave, but more handbags, more upcycling, and far cuter!) to meet is a breast cancer survivor. You know that resonates with me, and you can read her story over on The Finding Hope Site.
Not only are the bags, vegan, Canadian Animal-friendly, unique (you don’t get mass produced here usually one of a kind, or a very few the same), they are made lovingly and carefully. They use XS textiles & leftover fabrics from post-manufacturing & designer samples, and create absolutely beautiful and well built bags. I am a mom of 3 boys…I need durable! LOL But I also don’t want it to look like Tonka made my handbag either. I want it to be pretty, and I love that it is earth friendly.
I am always pulling fabrics out of the garbage pile to reuse. My hubby knows you do NOT throw out anything fabric. I generally make yarn out of anything, but I love that they make beautiful unique bags.
Echoes in the Attic have been featured on numerous sites, and in numerous articles which can all be found on their site. They have also won awards including:
- CTV National News “Canadian Originals”.
- Bradford Board of Trade – Social and Ecological Responsibility 2012
I love I can buy these locally, but you can too!! They actually sell them in local stores, across Canada. These are not big box stores, these are little unique shops that you can feel good about spending your money in. I love that! Or…you can buy online if you are like me and don’t want to leave your house if you don’t have to! LOL
Check out the super cute bag, I picked out from their secret warehouse (can you tell I like being an insider?? 😉 I may have gotten giddy when she said I got to come to the girl cave where all the local friends of the company get to shop):
I really love my bag, it’s so cute, and handy!
